Cancer is the only sign the Moon rules outright, and at 14:30 UTC today she crosses into it. Domicile is the word for that: the sign a planet owns, where it answers to no one. A third of her face is still lit, and shrinking.

The arrangement is geometric rather than poetic. The two lights were given the two signs nearest the height of summer, the Moon Cancer and the Sun Leo, and the five remaining planets were assigned outward from that pair in order of their distance, each taking two signs, one on either side. Nothing about it is arbitrary once you see the pattern, and it is standard across the Hellenistic material.

For most of the last week she has held no dignity at all. Aries gave her nothing. Gemini gave her nothing. That state has a name, peregrine, a planet abroad and holding no office, and it is far more common than any of the dignified conditions simply because most of the zodiac is nobody’s home. Taurus was the exception, her exaltation, and she spent half of that stay making no aspect at all.

There is one more gap before the crossing. From 08:41 UTC she completes no further aspect in Gemini, so the last stretch of that sign runs void, roughly six hours of it, and the ingress ends the silence. Vettius Valens, working in the second century, gives the Moon a weight in judgment that later writers rarely reduced. Six days from tonight she goes dark.
